Qld: Police pull together following police officer murder

Queensland police officers are banding together for support following the ambush murderof a sergeant on Friday.

Senior Sergeant PERRY IRWIN was shot dead at Caboolture, north of Brisbane.

He and two other officers were investigating gunshots in bushland near schools whenhe was ambushed by 21-year-old DAMIEN COATES.

COATES later shot and killed himself.

Queensland Police Union acting president DENIS FITZPATRICK says Sergeant IRWIN's deathhas united police in support for one another and the family of the dead officer.

Mr FITZPATRICK says the union and individual police officers have been overwhelmedwith messages and offers of support from the public following the shooting.

A police funeral will be held for Sergeant IRWIN on Thursday.
