FED: Carr to write to leaders over health system

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR says he will write to other state and territory leaders to
seek support for an independent review of Australia's health system.

Mr CARR says the move follows Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD'S decision NOT to endorse an
inquiry into the health system.

He says he will write to his colleagues suggesting they sponsor their own inquiry.

Mr CARR says he's disappointed Mr HOWARD has refused to hold a Productivity Commission
inquiry, a measure agreed on by state and territory leaders last month.

And he has discounted suggestions an independent review would hold no weight without
federal backing.
